What to Expect from Dynamo Training Solutions First Aid at Work Training
First Aid at Work (FAW) is an integral part of any organisation – actually, it is the law. Employees can be taken ill or suffer injuries at any time, even within environments considered safe. Whether the illness or injury is caused by the work an employee undertakes or processes a worker comes into contact with, is not important; what is important is that they always receive immediate medical attention, and an ambulance is summoned in the most serious cases.
The 1981 Provision of First Aid Regulations requires employers to provide adequate and appropriate:
First-aid equipment,
Facilities,
and Personnel
This is to provide immediate assistance when an incident occurs in the workplace. So what is considered ‘adequate and appropriate”? Well, this depends on the circumstances in your workplace, and by following the Management of Health and Safety Regulations 1999- which requires a suitable first aid needs risk assessment is undertaken by the responsible person on site. The bare minimum first-aid provisions on any work site are:
An appointed person in charge of first-aid arrangements
A suitably stocked first-aid kit
Information for your workforce about first-aid arrangements
In some work sites, especially in hazardous businesses, the management may determine that a trained first-aider is required at all times. This individual should have received some form of first-aid training that is specific to your workplace circumstances or completed a FAW or emergency-FAW program.
Depending on the course, the First Aider can be equipped with a variety of skills. Some of the things learned one of Dynamo Training Solutions FAW program will include:
1. First Aid Risks within the workplace
Educating employees on ways to identify and mitigate risks in advance is one of the best ways to avoid workplace accidents. Frequent site inspections and risk assessments also help to prevent injuries and eliminate the need to ever use the first aid kit.
2. Basic First Aid techniques
Well-trained staff members make it easier to maintain health and safety in the work environment. A first aider with basic skills should be able to:
• Use a bandage, dress a wound, and keep it isolated
• Calm down a victim until medical practitioners arrive
• Help victims suffering from burns, poisoning, or eye injury
• Assess and treat wounded, bleeding, or shock patients
• Manage choking and asthma attacks
• Assess and treat common illnesses, including dislocation, fractures, and epilepsy
• Identify signs of stroke and heart attack, and administer CPR where necessary
3. First Aid Resources
Trained employees should know where the first aid kit is located, what it contains, and how to use those provisions in an emergency. Any first-aid box should contain several things including sterile eye pads, sterile plasters, safety pins, wrapped triangular bandages, wrapped wound dressings, disposable gloves, and a leaflet providing general first-aid guidance.
4. Regulatory compliance for First Aid Training
This particularly refers to any applicable first aid guidelines, such as the necessary equipment for possible risks at your work site, and the number of first aiders required depending on the size of your business.
First Aid will not and does not completely eliminate the need for a hospital
The objectives of First Aid training include: keeping the victim alive, helping to promote recovery from the illness or injury, stopping the victim’s condition from worsening, and ensuring that the victim receives medical care. So, as soon as the First Aider has contained the emergency situation, the victim should be taken to a hospital to be checked by a medical professional. This is particularly important when there is a risk of internal bleeding, or an unknown illness in order to stop further damage in the future.
In any case, it is the duty of the First Aider to weigh the situation critically to determine whether or not the injured person should be taken to hospital.
