What is depression?


Depression is when someone feels persistently sad and unhappy for a long period of time, and this affects the individual's everyday life.


Signs and symptoms of depression


  • Thoughts of self-harm

  • Thoughts of suicide

  • Feeling irritable and/or intolerant of other people

  • Lack of energy

  • Muscle aches and pains

  • Changes in appetite

  • Weight loss or weight gain

  • Disturbed sleep patterns

  • Low sex drive


What to do if you are feeling depressed


If you are feeling depressed, it is important to seek professional help as soon as possible. You can contact your GP, a mental health helpline, or a counsellor for support and advice.


There are some things you can do to help yourself cope with depression. The charity, Mind, have some self-care tips for depression, including:


  • Be kind to yourself. Don’t blame yourself for feeling depressed or compare yourself to others. Try to do things that make you feel good, such as listening to music, reading a book, or spending time with a pet.


  • Stay connected. Reach out to people who care about you and who can offer you emotional support. You can also join a support group or an online community where you can share your feelings and experiences with others who understand.


  • Look after your physical health. Try to eat well, drink enough water, get enough sleep, and exercise regularly. These can help improve your mood and energy levels.


  • Find ways to relax. Stress can worsen depression, so try to find some activities that help you unwind, such as meditation, yoga, breathing exercises, or hobbies.


  • Seek help if you have suicidal thoughts. If you are thinking about harming yourself or ending your life, please call 999 or go to A&E immediately. Alternatively, you can also call Samaritans on 116 123 for free and confidential support 24/7.
